BETTER BUSINESS

Put Purpose at the Core of your Strategy

Dan Zawaki starts his blog with these words…

“They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different response. For the record, Albert Einstein did NOT say this, no matter how many times insane people swear he did.

If your company keeps losing money with the same business plan, what do you do?

Established businesses with an identified Core Focus™ may have choice words for what I’m about to say: Yes, you really CAN pivot your Core Focus when you need to… regardless of how long you’ve had it.”

And whilst I think Pivot is a grossly over-used word in these Covid Days, there are often very good reasons to make changes to your core focus.

So, if you’re tired of hearing, “We’ve always done it this way” then check out this EOS blog & see how a pivot can pay off in spades.

And this Forbes article gives you a much more in depth look at how you might do that, in conjunction with the EOS process:

On the converse side, maybe it’s time to stop pivoting & start fixing your business.

“For many businesses, pivoting was a knee-jerk reaction to a crisis, not a strategic decision. I’ve seen too many business leaders try to pivot without proper consideration.”

This article from Forbes takes you through some steps to understand if you really do need to pivot or if you just need to replan.

Reading all 3 of these articles will help you understand what is the best strategy for your business.

BETTER LIFE

69 Top Self-Care Tips for Taking Care of You During the Coronavirus Pandemic

COVID-19 has upended our daily routines, our future plans, and our lifestyles.

Whilst many of us are now moving out of lockdown, until we reach a high vaccination rate it’s unlikely that we won’t find ourselves back in some sort of lockdown.

So, I thought I’d try to find some life hacks that will help make lockdowns better – and hoping that if I do this then we won’t ever have to use them.

The thing I liked about this article was that whilst it was about self-care, there was some fun stuff too. I am definitely going to get myself a ‘magic pen’ 😁

“22. Make One of Your Pens a ‘Magic’ One

Choose a pen at random and designate that is your “magic” pen that you use only for writing positive things.

Yes, we acknowledge that this one sound hokey (and no one’s done a clinical trial yet to back it up). But this method can help some people change their mindset in a positive way, and it’s worth giving it a try in case it works for you, says Sincero. We create powerful connections with objects — just think of your favorite toy as a kid or a memento from a special trip. And we can tap into this positive connection whenever we want, just by “assigning” a significant attribute to that object and using it in that way. Try out your new magic pen by writing a love note to yourself first.”

FIND OF THE WEEK

The power of language

If, like me, you’re on the wrong side or approaching the wrong side of 50, then you’ll be pleased to know that picking up a new language — at any age — creates new pathways that could also make you a better person and may even help stave off dementia.

Learning anything changes your brain, of course, at least a little bit. But learning a language does it in high gear. John Grundy, a neuroscientist at Iowa State University who specializes in bilingualism and the brain, explains that learning a new language causes extensive neuroplasticity in the brain. In other words, when you learn a new language, your brain gets rearranged, new connections are made and new pathways are formed.”

As you know, we took a day off last week & went to Germany. In preparation for our trip, I re-downloaded the Duolingo app & started brushing up on my German.

I’m pleased to know that not only will it help when we finally get to see my family in Germany but there’s hope I might even become a nicer person!

Of course I am not remotely competitive & nor do I have time to play games, so I can’t imagine me spending all day Sunday on the app learning German so that I could come top of my German League & score enough points for my owl to wear a superstar cape 😁 🇩🇪
